MISTERIOS NEGROS HIKE: A FAIRYTALE FOREST WITH LAVA FIELDS
Welcome to the Misterios Negros hike, where Terceira Island shows off its best fairytale vibes. I think this might be the only hike I’ve ever done that, despite being so short, had me stopping constantly… for pictures. The enchanted forest you’ll wander through on the Misterios Negros trail is simply magical. With its dripping greenery, peaceful lagoons, and rugged lava fields, this adventure feels like stepping onto another planet.
It might not be the longest trail, but what it lacks in distance, it makes up for in pure charm. It’s the kind of world you step into and never forget.

Distance: 6 km loop
Hike Duration: around 2 hours
Elevation Gain: 175m
Difficulty: Moderately easy. While the trail starts off easy, sections of narrow paths and slippery lava rocks require good footing and care, especially after rain.

GETTING TO MISTERIOS NEGROS HIKE

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING MISTERIOS NEGROS
The hike begins at Lagoa do Negro, a tranquil little lagoon that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. From here, a gentle forest path takes you into the heart of Terceira’s wild landscape. Everything feels lush and beautifully alive.
Soon, the trail narrows, winding into what feels like an enchanted forest. As the path gets wetter and more rugged, you’ll find yourself surrounded by mossy trees and occasional glimpses of lava fields. Lagoa Vale Fundo is a cute, quiet lagoon that makes for a lovely stop to catch your breath or just admire the view.
But don’t get too comfortable. Things start getting trickier as you climb toward the Misterios Negros lava fields. The terrain shifts to rugged, slippery rocks, and the atmosphere turns almost otherworldly. This section can feel like a real adventure, especially after rain, but the effort is so worth it.
The descent offers stunning views of the Negros lava formations, a stark contrast to the lush greenery surrounding them. The trail continues through giant trees and wide forest paths, offering a relaxing end to the hike.
EXTRA HIGHLIGHT: PICO GASPAR VOLCANO
Pico Gaspar was the perfect cherry on top of this hike. The mini volcano offers panoramic views of the surrounding lava fields and the mysterious beauty of Misterios Negros hike. Standing there, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of awe for the raw power that shaped this island.
