6 TOP HIKES ON TERCEIRA: YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BEST TRAILS
Hello and welcome to my guide for top hikes on Terceira Island! Unlike São Miguel or Pico, where higher peaks or calderas dominate the landscape, Terceira’s magic lies in its crazy forests, lush jungles, and volcanic lava terrain. This island is a paradise for those who love hiking through dense greenery, misty trails, and unique volcanic formations rather than high-altitude ascents. If you’re into moody woodlands, enchanted paths, and nature that feels untouched, Terceira is your dream hiking destination.
Here are my 6 top hikes on Terceira – each one unique, unforgettable, and totally worth the effort!

Terceira offers a variety of accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets. Here are some top picks:
Calheta de Nesquim or : For those seeking tranquility and proximity to nature, this village offers a peaceful retreat closer to some of the island’s lush forests and trails.
Angra do Heroísmo: The island’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering a mix of history, culture, and amenities. Staying here provides easy access to several trails and a vibrant city atmosphere.

RENTING A CAR IS A MUST HERE
To fully experience Terceira’s hiking trails and natural beauty, you really have to rent a car. Public transportation is limited, and having your own four wheels will give you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Remember to book in advance, cars sell out really quickly on Azores, especially in the summer. You basically have two choices here:
Local Rental Companies: These may offer personalized service and local insights. It’s worth comparing options to find the best deal. Although a bit pricier, they often do include a full insurance.
If you want a cheaper option:
Discovercars.com: A platform I often use to book cars. It usually offers competitive rates and a hassle-free booking process. You can find the best deals here:
Best season for Terceira: The best time to hike in Terceira is between April and September when the weather is mild, with less rainfall and comfortable temperatures. Winter hikes can still be enjoyable, but trails may be wetter and muddier.
Gear: Proper preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. Here’s what I recommend bringing:
- Footwear: Comfortable trail running shoes or hiking boots if you don´t like mud. Trails can be uneven and occasionally slippery. My all-time favourite shoes for those type of adventures are Hoka Mafate Speed 4 but you can also read the guide for trail running shoes I tested in 2024.
- Clothing: Wear moisture-wicking layers and carry a waterproof jacket, as weather can change rapidly. For guidance on choosing the right clothing, read this guide.
- Sun protection: Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect against UV rays.
- Hydration and nutrition: Carry enough water and snacks to keep your energy levels up.
Grading: Difficulty grading is subjective and pretty much depends on your fitness level. Here’s a general guideline:
- Easy: Suitable for most fitness levels; mostly flat terrain.
- Moderate: Some elevation gain; may include uneven terrain.
- Challenging: Significant elevation gain; may require scrambling or have technical sections.
Always assess your own abilities and choose trails that match your experience and fitness level.
