HOW TO RENT A CAR IN SÃO MIGUEL: YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE
Getting around São Miguel without a car? You’d be missing out on all the best bits. This island is a treasure box of jaw-dropping landscapes, from volcanic craters to remote hot springs, and trust me, relying on buses just won’t cut it. A car gives you the freedom to chase those postcard-perfect spots and stop whenever something catches your eye..and believe when I say it. On São Miguel, it happens a lot.
WHY RENT A CAR IN SÃO MIGUEL?
The easiest way to unlock the island’s best spots is when you rent a car in São Miguel. Surely, public transport exists but is limited and unreliable for reaching incredible locations like Janela do Inferno trail – a hidden gem of the island, Salto Cabrito waterfall or Rocha da Relva. By renting a car in São Miguel you basically:
- Maximise your time: Drive straight to the highlights without waiting for buses.
- Access hidden gems: Discovering off-the-beaten-path viewpoints and trails.
- Set your own schedule: Stop wherever and whenever you want for photos or just to soak in the views.
BEST CAR RENTAL COMPANIES IN SÃO MIGUEL
When it comes to renting a car in São Miguel, you have two main options: international platforms and local companies.
1. Discover Cars
Discover Cars is usually my first choice due to their competitive prices, easy booking, and a wide range of vehicles. I often find great deals here, especially if you book in advance. Just keep in mind that insurance is usually an add-on, so you’ll need to handle claims if anything goes wrong.
2. Local rental companies
There are multiple options, they are slightly more expensive, but they often include full insurance, meaning less hassle if something goes wrong. They are more flexible though, so when I needed a car delivered to my hotel, I booked through www.magicislands.pt and was super happy.
COSTS AND TIPS
- Daily Rental Costs: Expect to pay €40–€70 for a compact car during peak season. Off-season prices drop to around €25–€40.
- Insurance: Local companies often include insurance, while international platforms may not. If booking with Discover Cars, check the terms and consider buying coverage for peace of mind.
- Fuel: Petrol prices are higher than mainland Europe, so budget accordingly.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHILE DRIVING IN SÃO MIGUEL
- Road conditions: The roads are generally in good condition, but rural areas may have narrower lanes and sharp turns.
- Parking: Free parking is common outside main towns, but in Ponta Delgada, you might need to use paid lots.
- Weather: Sudden rain showers can make roads slippery, so drive cautiously.
MY TOP DRIVING TIPS FOR SÃO MIGUEL
- Book early: Cars sell out VERY fast, especially in summer.
- Go small: Choose a smaller car for navigating narrow village roads. I started with Jeep Renegade, ending up renting a Renault Clio. Smaller is easier!
- Download maps: Cell service can be spotty in remote areas. Offline google maps are a lifesaver.
- Check the car: Inspect for damages and photograph everything before driving off.
