PLAYA DE TAMADITE HIKE

This guide is for a very beautiful loop hike in the greenest part of Tenerife – Parque Rural de Anaga. This awesome route starts from the village of Afur and goes along a beautiful gorge Barranco de Afur leading to the black sand beach – Playa de Tamadite, followed by the charming town of Taganana, surrounded by a natural landscape with great views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Distance: The total distance for this hike was 13km for a loop trail. If you’re only interested to hike up to the beach and back, the total distance is around 5km.

Hike duration: This hike’s duration was 3,5h. Adding a swim or a lunch break this hike should take no more than 5h.

Elevation gain: The total elevation gain for this hike was 842m.

Difficulty: This hike is moderately easy. In general the trail is not dangerous but the distance and almost 1k of elevation gain can surely be challenging for some.

Gear needed: Although Tenerife is warm all year round, you should always remember to check the weather forecast. Remember to bring layers, mainly against the wind and especially sun protection is a must for this hike due to exposition. If you’re unsure on what else to bring for a hike, read this guide.

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING PLAYA DE TAMADITE

Playa de Tamadite hike begins in a lovely town of Afur and its first part goes along an awesome gorge – Barranco de Afur. This part of the trek is around 2,5km and isn’t very demanding. 45 minutes later I reached the beautiful sights of the black sand beach Playa de Tamadite.

let’s begin

The beach is not very popular destination (yet), so it is often quiet and peaceful. The waves can be quite strong, so it is not advisable to swim here (the crystal clear water is very welcoming though). Anyway, the views of the rugged coastline and the surrounding mountains are really stunning. Maybe it is not as remote as my personal favourite beach of all time – Playa de Ijuana, a hidden gem of Tenerife but with the lack of crowd it surely can be a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.

After spending some time just listenining to the waves, I continued my Playa de Tamadite hike and began my hike up the mountain all the way to Taganana village. The is quite steep and can challenging when exposed to the sun. The views of the coast and the surrounding countryside are simply amazing herei.

remember roques de anaga? you can find it on my blog!

Once I made it to the top of the mountain, I reached a stunning viewing point Montana del Erizo where I could admire the beauty of Taganana. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this little village to look that spectacular.

The village is small and quiet. From here, you can continue your hike along the coast back to Playa de Tamadie or take the trail back to Afur. This part was a bit tedious as I had to hike my way up through the forest, once I made it to the top of the hill, the views got better. From there, I hiked my way down to Afur, appreciating those beautiful green hills of Anaga Mountains.

CONCLUSION

Playa de Tamadite hike featuring Taganana village is a unique and rewarding experience that lets you explore the real Tenerife. The trail is not very touristy and offers stunning views, unique landscapes, and endless hiking opportunities. It is however quite long and will definitely require some fitness level.
