MY EXPERIENCE HIKING FURNA DE FREI MATIAS CAVE TO MADALENA

The hike begins at Furna de Frei Matias Cave, a peaceful spot that marks the start of this scenic route. I parked my scooter right next to the sign, and headed down the cave to check out what the fuss is about. It is a tiny cave, surely interesting geological feature but nothing too crazy, fairly safe and easy to get around.

and the green cave!

Then, the trail starts with a gentle descent along a dirt road, with Pico’s volcanic peak on the left and panoramic views of Faial Island to the right. The landscape here is full of green pastures and grazing cows, giving the hike a charming rural atmosphere.

At the first crossroad, continue straight as you descend through a landscape filled with lush vegetation. The dirt path is dotted with curious cows who may pause their grazing to watch you pass by. This section is open, offering expansive views of Faial and the surrounding ocean – a typical highlight of a classic Azorean scenery 🙂

After passing through another crossroad (again, continue straight), the trail dips into a tranquil forest. Here, the silence becomes almost complete, with only birdsong and the rustling of leaves to keep you company. The forest offers a serene escape and a sense of Pico Island’s unspoiled nature.

Eventually, you’ll reach a small farm, where you’ll take a right and then a short detour back onto a dirt path leading toward Quinta das Rosas. This quiet reserve is a beautifully landscaped garden, offering benches, shade, and a small restroom (just push the door, it should be open for visitors). Although the water here isn’t potable, it’s the perfect spot to rest and enjoy a peaceful lunch surrounded by nature.

After recharging, exit through the same gate and follow the main road until a left turn onto a dirt path brings views of Faial back into sight. The final stretch to Madalena is a gentle descent, scenic and relaxing as you approach the town center.

Once you reach Madalena, stop by Mercado Bio if you’re down for a locally sourced lunch. I found it to be an ideal reward after my hike. If you’re planning to return to your starting point at the cave, taxis are available at the harbor, with a ride costing around €15 for a return journey otherwise, you´ll need to retract your steps to get back to the starting point.

Conclusion

The Furna de Frei Matias Cave to Madalena trail is an easy-going adventure through the Azores that won’t leave you gasping for air. It’s a perfect choice for those who want to enjoy incredible views without the feeling of being completely wiped out. If you want to see some other sides of Pico Island, this trail is a great way to experience the island’s beauty at your own pace.
