SALTO DO CABRITO WATERFALL HIKE

Salto do Cabrito waterfall hike in São Miguel was an adventure I eagerly looked forward to. This trail, beginning at the Caldeiras in Ribeira Grande, perfectly combines moments of peace with a sense of exploration. With its inviting lagoon and a comfortable area to relax, it sets the stage for a very pleasant journey. Although less impressive than the other waterfall I recommend (Salto Do Prego) it is much easier to access. Additionally, Salt Do Cabrito exhibits its own charm and is a great addition to your vacation in Sao Miguel. Conveniently located in the middle of the island, the waterfall is in close proximity to Miradouro De Santa Iria.

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING SALTO DO CABRITO WATERFALL

Our adventure began in the area of Caldeiras of Ribeira Grande, where the thermal springs and a welcoming recreation area set the stage for the journey ahead. With amenities like bathing facilities and a restaurant, it’s the perfect spot to gear up for the hike or unwind after the adventure.Salto do Cabrito Waterfall hike has its own official number: PR29SMI and it starts by descending from the Caldeiras, leading to a junction where we took left, walking through a landscape peppered with Lombadas and Monte Escuro’s vibrant hues. A notable pipeline marked a key point in the journey, directing us toward the serene jungle.

The adventure intensified as we navigated to the path framed by Japanese cedars. From here, we walked along a suspended metal pathway in the jungle, with towering rocks surrounding us. This route ultimately leads to the Hydroelectric Power Plant of Fajã do Redondo.

Though no longer active, the plant holds tales of the island’s past and apparently, if you book it before – EDA Renováveis offers a peek inside this historical gem. We passed it by and moved towards the waterfall.

Salto do Cabrito Waterfall

Upon reaching the central point of our hike, we finally saw the captivating Salto do Cabrito waterfall, surrounded by the untamed beauty of the nature. Just to clarify, despite the strong temptation to fully wet myself, I only went knee-deep due to the chilly temperature not aligning with my then preferences. However, reflecting on this experience two years later, after plunging into the 2°C waters of the Norwegian Sea, I now realize it wasn’t cold at all.

With the waterfall at our back, the return journey offered another perspective of the island’s diverse landscapes. We passed by the Pico Vermelho Geothermal central, adding layers of cultural and geological interest to our hike. The path back included crossing two streams, one of which features a suspension bridge, adding an element of thrill to the trek.

Conclusion

Salto do Cabrito Waterfall is an a great short hike and a perfect add-on when visiting the Gheotermal pools of Termas das Caldeiras. This hike is particularly ideal for adventure seekers who prefer less crowded trails, and it showcases the captivating beauty that awaits there.
